Evaluation: Question 4

1.       How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During all stages of the of our media coursework we used media technologies to enhance the presentation and construction of our media product. The use of media technology was vital in the planning of our media production. In the initial stages of planning, when location scouting we would use an iPhone4S to take pictures of the locations that we wanted to investigate to see if they would be suitable for our production. These images could then be sent to other members of the team so the suitability of the location could discussed immediately, to avoid wasting precious time during the planning stage. During the location scouting stage of planning we also used Cannon 600D DSLR camera to capture high quality images that, that could be used in later stages of planning such as during focus group, meetings, blogs and on the Facebook page that we later set up to allow us to gather information from our target on audience and make vital creative decisions during the planning stage. The Facebook page allowed us to set up online polls and discussion forums as well as communicate with the target audience during the construction of our media product when extras where needed for filming, the site allowed us to contact large amounts of people at one time and to great some coverage of the final product before it was even released.  The site also allowed us the gain vital audience feedback at each stage and discuss with that they thought were positive and negative about the ideas that we pitched to them,  additionally allowing us to keep in touch with other members of the team, during all stages to discuss ideas quickly, on both the trailer and ancillary tasks. Furthermore the Cannon 600D wasn’t just successful in the location scouting images, but allowed us to film our trailer to a high quality (1080p) to allow our production to have a professional quality, instead of the production being a poor quality. Other equipment used during the filming of the production included Tri- pods to allows us to capture footage especially during scenes of conversation to keep to camera steady and create fluid shots that could be placed well within the final trailer. Glide tracks and steady frames where used during action scene filming and car scenes when the object was on the move, to reduce to shake and make to footage look more professional. During the planning and research stage of our production, YouTube allowed us to research into codes and conventions of the psychological thriller genre including existing media products that we could gather ideas from for our own production, such the Eagle Eye trailer. YouTube was also used during the planning stage for beneficial tutorials to help with camera techniques and lighting when shooting on location. The final production is also placed on YouTube to gather audience feedback through comments and allow maximum audience coverage as; it can be accessed across the world. Within the first week the trailer gained over 1,000 views and 20 subscribers to the channel, this site also allowed us to view daily views and gather statistics on where people are finding the trailer from. Blogger and Prezi allow me to present my planning, research and final productions in a professional format, instead of conventional text. Blogger allowed me to keep an organised record of all stages of the production and present my work to the targeted audience in the same way that we used Facebook, as I also had surveys that allowed me to gather feedback from the focus group, and to make creative decisions during planning and construction stages. Final Cut Pro was used in the editing of the trailer, this software is used to make the editing of the trailer look professional and to allow effects to be added to make the trailer have the same conventions and codes as existing media products and create a seamless effect that made the product look of a professional standard and bring all of the footage and audio that we has gathered together.

Evaluation: Question 3

1.       What have you learned from audience feedback?

We initially made a YouTube account to promote our media product and gather a wider audience viewing platform. From this site we gathered audience feedback through the comments that people left, including one by Jon Marren who suggested that “ Can there actually be a film for this?.” Additionally other comments where giving us critical feedback, such as that from Leonkitsune suggesting perhaps that the trailer is not suitable for audiences as it suggests on the preview screen at the beginning of the trailer. This critical feedback allowed us to perhaps looking into ratings and certificates for the trailer and how these occur as these where something that we hadn’t researched during our planning, this is something we could initially look at in the future and ensure that we look at all aspects of the trailer in great detail during the planning and research stages. The account also additionally allowed us to view statistics of sources of viewing of the site and the trailer, and understand more about the targeted audience, this could be influential when reaching targeted audiences in the future and understand how sites such as YouTube work and how our product can be pitched to a wider audience for maximum viewing. Furthermore the Facebook page we set up to help gather feedback from our targeted audience. The final production and individual tasks were put up on the site. This allowed us to gather feedback on our production quickly, initially only family and friends saw the trailer, however after the trailer had been shared on other Facebook pages and Twitter the trailer gained more views and Feedback, including a worldwide audience feedback from America, who asked when the movie release date was in the US, as they thought this was a trailer for a real movie. Once it was explained to them that it was just four coursework they said that the trailer looked very professional and said that if there was a movie for this trailer that they would pay to watch it a cinema. Through the use of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube alone we gathered over 1,000 views in the first week of the video going live. The use of these sites allowed us to understand how pitching our product on multi-platform allows us to gain maximum viewing, and understand how target audiences are viewing our media product and existing media products and understand how these sites can be multi-functional and used to gather feedback that can be used when evaluating our product and looking a future products and how they should be constructed, to fit in with current trends in viewing trailer for films. Furthermore we also used emails to ask people involved in the main production, what they thought of the final production after they had been involved in the construction of it. We sent copies of the production the local council who we leased with the gather permission to film in a local car park for some of the action scenes in the trailer, as they were owned by the council and we needed permission to film. The copies sent to the council where passed via email to people who were involved in the media industry and said they would happily comment on our production and give us feedback on what we could improve on in future products. Feedback from Mark Nutkins and independent film maker who has worked on Hollywood films upon viewing the trailer gave both positive and negative feedback , say that the trailer was of good quality and look professional, comparing that it was created by people of a young age with low budget equipment, however they suggested that the quality if the sound should be improved especially when being viewed on table devices, as this is vital as our targeted audience largely view are product on mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones on the go. He also suggested during the camera angles should be used to establish each character as the trailer, only used a small number of camera angles. This allowed me to understand the importance of camera angles and how they can be used in the narrative to give more emphasis of characters mood and authority.

Evaluation: Question 2

1.       How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My ancillary tasks deliberately have discontinuity with the main production and were more focused on the on the personality of the character rather than how the trailer conforms to the codes and conventions of the genre of a psychological/ action thriller as a whole and the format of a trailer. The trailer largely focuses on the narrative of the story behind the character rather than the character themselves, therefore within my ancillary tasks I wanted to show that and focus on the character more. The combination of both the main task and poster and magazine cover works well however there is a clear discontinuity between them. The magazine as seen from my planning and research is largely based on the French movie magazine Premiere and the way that the main character image is the only image present on the cover. The image takes up most of the cover to make it the main focus and to draw all attention to the image; therefore no other images are used unlike other magazines such as Empire and Total Film. The colour scheme for both the ancillary poster and magazine are alike as I wanted them to have a clear continuity between both and represent the character on both. The poster uses only one main image following the codes and conventions of most movie posters, however during my research, I liked to way the Black Swan poster used a central image of the main character using direct mode of address.  I used the same font for both magazine and poster as, the use of Trajan Pro 3 a bold font with a slight cursive effect font allowed me to reflect the personality of the character not only by the body language of the character within the central image but also through the font used.  I used this font and the way that it could is bold and stands out from the page, I wanted this to reflect how the characters personality is strong willed, this is linked to the trailer and how we see him action scenes during the trailer, and how the bold text represents his desire and passion to find the truth. The cursive effect of text reflects how he is sophisticated and of a high class as we see him dresses suites through the trailer. The red and white scheme used throughout the magazine and poster connotes both danger with the read font perhaps suggesting death or suffering and the white suggesting innocence this also reflects on the whole narrative of the characters situation. This red and white theme I decided would be considered as my house theme and would be portrayed in both my ancillary tasks. The deliberate discontinuity was made as the trailer is very dark, this is reflected through the lighting used as well as the characters clothing making the character blend into his surrounding and become part of the narrative as he should within the trailer. However I wanted to put more emphasis on the character as said before therefore the use of bold bright text and more focus on a central image of the character on both the magazine and poster allowed me to do this. On the other hand the trailer as product is represented as modern and wanted this to be continuity that is reflected on all of the products, this is also reflected in the font of both the magazine and poster, with the title font Arial bold used to give it a modern feel and reflect on the meaning of the title its self, with the font looking similar to that used on a computer screen log in and introducing the idea of it reflecting a modern product as the trailer also has on screen text that appears in a similar font. In conclusion the products work well together and have aspects that link them together; however there is clear discontinuity between all of the products to reflects on the creative decision making that was made during planning and research and what I wanted the main focus of the ancillary tasks to be.

Evaluation Question 1

1.       In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

During the initially drafting session with the rest of my team we decided upon the idea of making a psychological thriller, however we wanted to create a trailer with aspects of the action thriller genre and consulted our focus group.  They recommended that we based the trailer around the psychological thriller genre as be didn’t have the facility’s to make realistic action scenes that are seen to be part of the action thriller codes and conventions that we have researched into, and additionally didn’t  have the budgets to facilitate this. Therefore our production is based on the postmodern theory technique called a hybrid, and the idea that our production is a combination of two different genres.

During our have used the codes and conventions of both a psychological thriller and action thriller through the use of low key lighting used throughout, we did this using a sport light, this allowed to create a sense of suspense and darkness behind both the narrative and the character, as well as the reflecting on the villains. This sense of darkness is also created as the male lead wears a suite throughout, the dark clothing perhaps suggest that they have something to hide and allows them to blend in with the narrative. The use of suites and dark clothing also fits in with the of an action thriller and conventions of actions thrillers such as existing media products such as James Bond how the main lead is always smartly dressed, even during action scenes. On the other hand our media product and challenges the conventions and the idea and representation of women as we have a women of high authority within our production that challenges the codes and conventions of most existing products of the same genre, however she is place for the male gaze and is also dressed in a low cut top and skirt that emphasises this theory. However the product also puts emphasis on and follows the conventions of almost all existing media products through Propps theory and the idea that several types of characters within all narrative situations. We have followed this theory though the use of a main protagonist and agonist and the idea that there is always a hero and villain within the narrative. Additionally our products uses hermeneutics codes as first suggested by Barthes and that are conventions of action thrillers through the use of props such as weapons such as guns and documents that signify a preferred reading to the targeted audience, about how this could signify a specific detail within the narrative. The use of uses and gratifications theory allows these props such as weapons used in most action thrillers is used to position the audience into thinking that they are signifiers. Our production challenges, uses or develops codes and conventions as the production is originally based upon a psychological thriller, however after development the products has more codes and conventions of the action thriller genre.

Planning: Ancillary Task 1- Magzine Mock Up 3

Drafting for my magazine cover in the final stages of completion, I consulted my focus group and asked them what they like about the cover so far and make suggestions on what can be improved.
The focus group said that they like the central image and said that the effect on the image made it stand out, additionally they liked the colour scheme and font used.
However they suggested that i consider rearranging the layout of the tag lines either side of the main image as, the colour fade into the background and aren't always clearly visible, therefore a should change the layout. Additionally they also that i need to make the title of the magazine bolder so it standout from the rest of the text.

Research Codes and Convention Identity Trailer Analysis- Main Task

Identity is a 2003 mystery thriller directed by James Mangold. Strangers from all walks of life including a limo driver escorting a fading television star, parents with a young son who's marriage is in crisis, a cop transporting a dangerous convict, a beautiful call girl, a couple of young newly weds, and one nervous motel manager are caught up in a rainstorm leaving them stuck at a desolate motel in Nevada. Soon they realise they maybe stuck at the motel for another reason as one by one people start getting killed off. As tensions flare and fingers are pointed, they have to get to the bottom of why they are there.

Identity is within the psychological thriller genre, with the main narrative of the film focusing on several different characters who are trapped at a motel due to a rain storm, however people soon go missing and the characters realise they are linked in some way.

The audience is firstly identified with the psychological thriller genre through the conventions such as music, issues for the characters to face such as weather and death with the trailer also having a sense of mystery.

the trailer attracts the audience as it makes the narrative non linear and unclear, also appealing to the a wider target audience range and age through the uses of key characters that are all ages, so that thee wider audience has a character that they can relate to. The trailer last for around 2 minuets 29 making it a theatrical trailer, giving the audience more of an insight into the film than a teaser trailer would. 14-15 different types of shots are approximately used within the trailer with the vast majority of the shots being made up of close up of the several key characters/ main protagonists faces showing different emotions such as fear and horror. Simple fast paced editing is used throughout, with editing and transitional techniques such as cutting, fading and blurring being used. Mid and long shots are also used to show key locations and to set the scene.

Diegetic sound such as the main protagonist narration/voice over seen to be set in a police interrogation setting, allows us to see the trailer as more of a story in the third person almost making use feel as if the person is telling us this story directly and that we are part of the trailer and story to. With other diegetic sounds such as screaming and the use of high pitched voices when the characters speaks adds more emphasis on the horror that these people are going through.
Non diegetic sounds create tension and suspense with the music increasing in both pitch and volume as the trailer reaches it climax at around 1.09 onwards, this allows us the audience to understand that this is seen as the best part of the trailer and that our attention is needed. This also signifies that events within the trailer are about to change usually for the worst within this genre. All if the characters within the trailer are represented as equal due to the circumstances that they are currently in even thought they are all originally from different backgrounds.

The trailer also uses codes of enigma by carefully leaving clues and questions by the characters in which the audience has to try and solve. This trailer such as disappearing bodies and the unknown question if how they are all linked is what grabs the audiences attention making them want to know more. Additionally slowly releasing the narrative and plot of the story into the audiences hands this is done through bold title statements made on screen which convey clues and messages to the audience about the narrative, characters and to warn audiences about whats to come.

The following codes and conventions are used:

  • fast paced editing to create mystery and suspense.
  • suspense through diegetic dialogue
  • code of enigma
  •  a narrative established to the film
  • suspense through non diegetic music
  • titles making statements
  • unidentified threats to the lead characters, and problems that they must solve
  • sense of venerability
  • production company logos.

Logistical Information- Production Information

Research: Audience Theories

Audience theory’s

With the creation of the Internet and sights such as You tube making it more accessible for audiences to find movie trailers and share, the trailers with other people across the world. Audiences increasingly seek out trailers, with them not passively consuming them but actively pursuing them trough sites such as You tube.

Audiences use trailers-

  • To make choices about seeing a film
  • To prepare  them selves for the movie experience of the cinema and have some understanding of the narrative and genre of the film they are going to watch.
  • As a stand alone form of entertainment or even a distraction from everyday life, that can be used as a pass time and also be used as a form of recreation.

Two step Flow Theory- Paul Lazarsfeld

The two step flow theory suggests that ideas flow from mass media to opinion leaders, which them share these ideas widely increasingly through social media such as Twitter and Facebook to a wider population (eg the Share button on Facebook.) This theory can be applied to our own production as we used social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to gather Professional opinion from other people, and people who are indirectly affected by the trailer through those opinion leaders. Globalisation increase due to these sights allows people to instantly access that trailer from anywhere in the world at any given time.

Uses and Gratifications theory

This theory is primarily focused on the consumer, this suggests that the audience affects the media through their own interpretation of the media its self. Trailers have varying uses and gratifications which the audience activity seeks. Within our own production their a are key uses and gratifications that the audience activity seeks:
Diversion- as escape from everyday pressures such as work and school, and I chance to release those pressures through the media.
Surveillance- audiences activity seeking information on current affairs and gather information on the world outside their own. Trailer convey messages through codes and conventions about current affairs, trends and what happening in the world around us. Our trailer fits within the theory as diversion is more commonly seek ed by our audience as a way of relaxing and escaping from life’s pressures for a moment.
Personal relationships- using the media for emotional or other social interaction, such as substituting trailers or soap operas for real life.
Personal Identity- using media to find and reflect yourself within the media text. And learning from these texts and changing your behaviour.

Production Ancillary Tasks- Lead Photo Shoot

Here is mid shot of the lead character, using direct mode of address to engage with audience, this image is going to be the focal point of either the poster or the film magazine front cover. The lead has dark clothing on to great a sense of darkness behind the character, fitting with the genre of the main production the trailer. In the image i have used low key light the left of the lead, to create a shadow on his face, depicting a dark and light side to his face, suggesting the person he is within the trailer. The idea for this image was taken from the Skyfall poster., which shows bond with direct mode, dark clothing and lighting on one side of the face, as like out own image.

Behind the scenes look at the set up of the photo shoot, including the low key lighting position to left up high facing down from a high angle onto the character, with another positioned to the right of the character from a low angle facing up. Missing posters are used in the back ground to convey the story of this character. The lead is dress in dark clothing reflecting the use of lighting and background colour, making sure that they both contrast well. The lead is using indirect mode of address during this picture to perhaps suggest he is looking at something in the distance.

Same low key lighting also used in this image, with the characters convey direct mode of address with the audience to make a connection with them. This image is going to be used as the front cover of the film magazine. The body position makes the character seen strong in both appearance and presence, as well as reflecting the characters personality.
The same shot but taken in landscape, the make wider use of the background behind and to have the option for the movie poster to be in landscape with other images behind.

Same but from further away.
Mid shot of the leads torso and face, with the image being used as the movie poster main image, with the lead direct mode of address being very dominant within this picture.
Another mid shot of the lead with more emphasis on facial expression and body positioning.
All images where taken using a Cannon 550D, with the set up we have in our Media room.
All images taken by Chelsea Jarman

Research: Narative theories

Vladimir Propp

Vladamir Propp said  that all the characters could be resolved into 7 broad character functions in the 100 tales he analysed:
  1. The villain — struggles against the hero.
  2. The dispatcher — character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  3. The (magical) helper — helps the hero in their quest.
  4. The princess or prize and her father — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. The hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.
  5. The donor— prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.
  6. The hero or victim/seeker hero — reacts to the donor, weds the princess.
  7. The false hero  — takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess

Lzetan Todorov

Todorov suggested that stories begin with an equilibrium or status quo where any potentially opposing forces are in balance, this is then disturbed by some event, setting a chain reaction of a series of events. Todorov suggested that conventional narratives are structured into five stages.
  • A distribution of the equilibrium by some action
  • A recognition that there has been a disruption
  • An attempt to repair the disruption
  • A reinstatement of equilibrium
  • A state of equilibrium at the onset.

Roland Barthes

Barthes said that texts are either open or closed, with the action of texts being influenced by five codes-

  • The hermenuetic code
  • The symbolic code
  • The cultural code
  • The semantic code
  • The enigma/ Proairetic code.

Todorovs Narrtive Theory within Production

Many trailers and film follow Todorovs theory; we have also done the dame within our own production, through the theory of distribution and dis equilibrium within the narrative. Our distribution sources from the protagonist unknowingly undergoing facial surgery to have the face of the wanted criminal. The character then attempts to repair the equilibrium by seeking revenge and justice to have it reinstatement of equilibrium.

Barthes Narrative theory within Production.

This theory suggests the use of codes such as hermeneutic and proairetic questions, for example within our own production Hermeneutic codes such as who is the protagonist running from? And what danger is around the corner?  Proairetic codes included in are productions are, will he find justice? And will his struggle be in vein?

Propps theory within Production

Using this theory within our own production we have chosen characters that are from Propps character functions, we have a villain (the criminal) who steals the identity of an Innocent man. The helper who guides the victim to find his true identity and find out who done this to him and we also have victim the Innocent person to which these horrible things have been done and the main actor in which the story is based around.

Research: Psychological Thriller Codes and Conventions Main Task

Codes and conventions of a psychological thriller

Psychological thriller is a sub-genre of thriller, and has a heavy focus on the character themselves this is predominantly through close up reaction shots of characters. It incorporates elements of mystery through low level lighting creating shadows, which in turn bring a sense of secrecy, additionally costume design such as dark covering clothing can also become a presentation of the characters inner darkness as well as traits of the thriller genre. Some conventions of the genre often overlap with those of the horror genre. Suspense is created through pace paced editing which is prominently black and white or of a darker nature and music that his of high tension, eerie, with long periods of silence during critical moments. Flash backs are conventions of the thriller genre, time disorientation linked to Todorovs theory of dis equilibrium is used to confuse the audience or to sow the past to give an insight into why the characters are the way they are. Within psychological thrillers there is often a first person narrative allowing the viewer to understand the characters story and psychological state or mind.

Elements of psychological thrillers

  • Reality- Characters often try to determine what is true and what is not within the narrative through the use of flashbacks.
  • Perception- The way they see the world around them, they often see the world around them as a dull place.
  • Mind- The mind is often used as a location for narrative conflict, where characters battle their emotions to reach a new level of understanding. This is primarily done through the first person narrative.
  • Identity-characters often are confused about or doubt who they are and try to discover their true identity.
  • Death- characters often have a fear or fascination with death.
  • Purpose- characters often try to discover what their purpose is in their lives, and the narrative conflict often is a way for characters to discover their purpose.
  • Mystery
  • Drama

Conventions of psychological thrillers

  • Time disorientation- flashbacks, dreams
  • Music a mixture of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, even music within some scenes of the trailer
  • Fast paced edits
  • Frequent changes of camera angle

Directors of thrillers.

  • Alfred Hitchcock is known as the master of suspense, and uses code and conventions effectively, he is best known for films such as Psycho.
  • David lynch- is known as a surrealist director, whose films create mystery, and puzzles within the films that audiences have to figure out, for example Mulholland Drive.
  • Martin Scorsese- director of The Departed and Shutter Island, makes films have mystery through, using dis equilibrium to keep the audience watching right until the end when the plot behind the story is revealed.
